The Ninevites were notorious bad guys but God, in His mercy, decided to give them a chance to repent. Jonah ignored God’s direct orders, but God gave him another opportunity to listen. The human race inherited sin and death from the fatal mistake of our first parents, but the salvation offered us by Jesus is our second chance.

God is a God of mercy. He’s not rigid with us, but compassionate and forgiving. We all make mistakes. We ignore the promptings of the Holy Spirit, and refuse to follow God’s will for us. But it’s not too late for us to turn things around. God extends a second chance to us today. He gives us an opportunity to try again – and to do right by Him this time.

The Good News of the Gospel tells us Jesus came to save us from our sins. But this isn’t a free pass to do whatever we want. Instead, it’s an invitation to respond to God’s grace. It’s a prompting to answer His call with the fervor of the Ninevites, with a step in the right direction, like Jonah. We don’t want to be like the “evil generation” Jesus chastises in the Gospel. They rejected their second chance; they scorned the salvation offered them by Jesus.

Let’s embrace the second chance God gives us today. Let’s offer Him a contrite and humble heart. It’s time to repent of all our sins and failings. We can seek God’s mercy through prayer, penance, and the sacrament of confession. We can take a step towards Him today and every day.

It’s not too late for us, because God’s mercy is abundant. He’ll continue to offer us second chances until the day we meet Him face to face.

How will we respond to His infinite mercy today?
