“Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life; you have the words of everlasting life,” we read in the verse before today’s Gospel. Our minds are incapable of envisioning life in Heaven, but the Church tells us that ‘we shall see God’ (cf John 3:2), and that the happiness which we will enjoy there is indescribable (1 Cor 2:9). Our Lord spoke to his disciples in many occasions, about what is necessary to reach the Kingdom of Heaven.

In meditating on these passages, the Church reminds us during Lent, that mortification leads to joy and Heaven. The life of a Christian is not an easy life but it is worth every effort. We shall correspond to God’s love with fidelity, loyalty, and docility to His Will. This is achieved by fulfilling the commandments and teachings of the Church with faith and nobility. In this, we find what God asks of us and what we ought to do at every moment, trusting that our Father knows what is best for his children.

We must also teach the commandments and what we see to others, not checking our faith at the door. Our faith should permeate all encounters in our life.

The courage and faithfulness of the first Christians is what Our Lord also asks of Christians today, when human values are under attack. A well-formed conscience will lead us to be law-abiding, ready to protect fundamental individual rights and stand against anything contrary to the natural law.

With an after Mass prayer from Pope Clement XI, let us say to Our Lord: “I want whatever you want, I want because you want, I want as you want, I want as long as you want.” And Our Lady can teach us to fulfill with love the Will of God in everything we do.
