In a visit with Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, Pope Francis wished with “particular affection.” the retired pontiff happy 92nd birthday.
True friends challenge us and help us to be faithful on our journey. – Benedictus PP. XVI
Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI turned 92 years old yesterday on April 16th, born in 1927. On the eve of the occasion, Pope Francis paid a visit to the retired pontiff at the Monastery of Mater Ecclesiae in Vatican City.
Interim director of the Holy See Press Office, Alessandro Gisotti, said the visit gave Pope Francis the opportunity to wish him a happy 92nd birthday with “particular affection” and offer his best wishes for upcoming Easter.
Pope Francis has made it a yearly tradition to visit his predecessor prior to April 16th and extend his papal birthday wishes to a fellow pontiff. In 2016, when Benedict XVI’s birthday coincided with Easter, Pope Francis wished him happy birthday with “double celebratory character.”
Its unknown whether Benedict XVI raised a pint of beer, as he has done in previous years, or whether his brother Georg Gänswein visited him.
