Pope Francis celebrated his 77th birthday today, his first since ascending the Seat of St .Peter, with Mass and breakfast at the Vatican with four homeless men.
After mass as Casa Santa Marta, the Vatican guesthouse where the Supreme Pontiff resides, Pope Francis shared breakfast with the four homeless men who live on the Rome streets just outside the walls of Vatican City. One of the men also brought his dog, whom he held as he was presented to the Pope. Joining the Holy Father and the homeless men were Vatican officials, including Archbishop Konrad Krajewski, the Almoner of His Holiness. The Vatican said the meal had a “family-like” atmosphere.
Additionally, the Vatican has released a digital card to mark the Pontiffs 77th birthday, his first as Pope. The interactive card contains over 30 photos accompanied by various quotes from the Pope. The card can viewed on the Vatican’s Website.
On Saturday, Pope Francis was presented with an early candle-topped cake by children at a Vatican administered pediatric care dispensary center. Francis blew out the candles, thanked the youngsters for the cake and promised: “I’ll tell you later if it’s good or not.”
One more special gift awaits Pope Francis as his favorite Argentine Soccer team, San Lorenzo, will present the Pope with a replica of their recently won Championship trophy.
Pope Francis was born on December 17th, 1936 as Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Flores, a barrio of Buenos Aires, Argentina to Italian immigrant parents Mario José Bergoglio and his wife Regina María Sívori.
