On December 31 at 11:45 AM, Pope Francis personally called the called the community of the Carmelite nuns of Lucena (located Cordoba, Andalusia, Spain). However, none of the nuns were available to answer the phone!

Speaking in Spanish, the Holy Father left them a voicemail message in which said he said:

“What are the sisters doing that they can’t answer [the phone]? This is Pope Francis! I wanted to greet you in this end of the year, so I will see if I can call you later. May God bless you all!”

The once large and powerful community of Carmelites has been reduced to just 5 nuns, 3 of which are from Pope Francis’ native Argentina. It has been confirmed that Pope Francis did indeed call again later in the day around 7:15 PM, and this time the nuns were available to answer.
