We live in turbulent times.

We live in a world in which pornography, religious persecution, abortion, sexual aggression, and all manner of social ills beset upon on every day.  This relentless barrage of issues can shake the confidence of even the most faithful.

Like the snakes of the desert from which the Israelites suffered their poisonous bites and death, the ills of today can sink their venomous fangs into our flesh and cause certain death.  The gradual slithering of temptation into our lives comes slowly and low to the ground so as to make it almost imperceptible.

These serpents make no noise.  They have only one task.

Nowadays, our lives are infested with snakes at every turn and it may seem, at times, to be nearly impossible to navigate a righteous life without getting bitten.

But, as God allowed life to those bitten by a serpent if they looked up at the bronze serpent that Moses had mounted to a pole, so, too, must we look up at Jesus on the cross if we are to live.  The temptation for the Israelites was to look down at the bite. God asked them to look up.

Just as Jesus called Peter to walk on the water to Him, we are called to keep our eyes on Jesus through rough waters and serpent-infested deserts.  Once again, God asked Peter to look up into the eyes of Christ. When he looked down, he started to sink in the rough waters surrounding him.

We can navigate a righteous life if we keep our eyes focused on Jesus.  We can endure the bites of our culture. We can walk on rough waters.

We just have to keep looking up.
