Today’s first reading is a beautiful and inspiring story about how far one would go to choose God over everything.

And why would we do this?

Our Lord tells us in today’s gospel that the truth will set us free. He also reveals to us that He is the Truth. Everything else we choose over Him enslaves us, and we have nothing if we have everything but Him.

C.S Lewis explains, “Aim at Heaven and you will get Earth ‘thrown in’: aim at Earth and you will get neither.” The Truth of the matter is that nothing really matters but Jesus.

This is why the Christian martyrs throughout the ages have given their lives freely for God. Because when their choice was their own life or separation from Him, they knew what mattered infinitely more.

On Good Friday we remember that our Lord sees us in the same way. Truth Himself told the truest thing. We are worth it all. Hebrews 12:2 tell us, “For the sake of the joy that lay before him he (Jesus) endured the cross..”

And what was His joy?

To be united with us. To set us free from the slavery of sin. We are His joy!

When His choice was His own life or separation from you, He knew what mattered infinitely more.
