Most Catholics do not know that the Pope has his own missionary fund. The Pontifical Mission Societies, also known as MISSIO, is the name of a group of Catholic missionary societies that are under the jurisdiction of the Pope.

The Pontifical Mission Societies are the Catholic Church’s official support organization for overseas missions since 1822, providing for a global network of people who are making a difference for communities in need around the globe.

The Pope specifically asks the Pontifical Mission Societies to help bring the message of Christ to the world, especially in countries where Christianity is new, young or poor. The societies care for and support the younger churches until they are able to be self-sufficient. It is the only organization which supports every one of the 1,100 mission dioceses of the world.

To help support and facilitate the activities of Catholic missionaries providing front-line relief, The Pontifical Mission Societies have created missio.org, a new and innovative Catholic crowd-funding platform that allows you to directly assist Catholic missions and projects all over the world.

MISSIO allows you to search through life-giving and life-saving projects – ones providing for basic needs, others extending the Good News of the Gospel to remote areas, and still more, bringing the light of the Lord’s loving-kindness to those in the darkest circumstances. With MISSIO, you can choose one of these missions of Pope Francis and donate directly to them, knowing that 100% of your donation will go directly there. You can also share them on social media and reignite the discussion and remind people of these forgotten situations, so others can support the projects also.

Launched by Pope Francis himself, the MISSIO platform offers a direct connection to change-makers who work on the “front lines” making a difference for the poor and forgotten through direct, daily service.

MISSIO exists through the generosity of Catholics and plays a crucial role in combating poverty, disease, injustice and exploitation.

Just some of the areas of need MISSIO serves are:

Whether it is helping provide clean drinking water in Vietnam, educating underprivileged women in Pakistan, or combating drug addiction and homelessness in Argentina, wherever there is a need for Catholic missionary charity, MISSIO is there.

As this Lent comes to a close, Pope Francis is asking for direct help with one if his personal causes: alleviating the tragic and dire suffering in South Sudan.

South Sudan is hard hit with famine. Conflict and unrest have added to the crisis. Families are seeking shelter, food and care in Catholic hospitals and various health centers. Others are fleeing in search of safety and food. Right now, 40% of the country’s population is in need of immediate assistance, or they may die of starvation. Catholic priests and Sisters are reaching out to bring food, care and supplies to these communities. Pope Francis is pleading with Catholics and all people of good will to help provide desperately needed relief.

Whether you send help to all the Pope’s missions, support his project in South Sudan, or choose any of the other projects on MISSIO, know that 100% of all donations go directly to those in need.
