Students at Michigan Technical University in Houghton, MI have constructed a Catholic Chapel made entirely of snow and ice and have dubbed it the “Our Lady of the Snows” chapel.

The chapel was by members of the St. Albert the Great Catholic Campus Ministry in addition to a Marian Ice Grotto that was part of the college’s Winter Carnival Snow Statue contest.

Once completed, an “Ice Mass” was celebrated in the chapel by Father Ben Hasse, Vocations Director at Diocese of Marquette Vocations Office and Pastor at St. Albert the Great Catholic Campus Ministry at MTU, with over 125 people attending.

Here’s a video of a portion of the Mass:

There will another Mass celebrated in the chapel for the Feast of Saint Josephine Bakhita on Monday, February 8 with Hot Cocoa afterwards.

  1. I live in Dorset England and for many years we travelled to Chatel, Haute Savoire, France for the family for skiing. Me mainly as a babysitter. But just to say that the Catholic Church in the town of Chatel was named Our Lady of the Snow with a beautiful statue outside;
    Congratulations on your ice chapel – stunning.
    God Bless and prayers please for my brother James who died on the 5th February after a long illness.
