  1. I love how you explain things Fr Barron..I’ve been a Catholic for a year now, and your teachings help me to understand what it is to live the Catholic faith.Thank you for sharing this with us.

  2. I enjoyed your comments on Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery.” I had the same reaction to the story as you, but I am haunted for a different reason. When I taught this story in high school, a few students would laugh out loud when the woman was stoned. That scared me to death!

  3. What are your thoughts on moral atheism? One of my best friends is an atheist and often behaves in a much more moral fashion than those who have “been educated in Christianity.” Do you really think that morality belongs to theists or more specifically Christians? Doesn’t killing go against natural law and is therefore wrong regardless of whether or not you believe in God or the salvation in Christ? I very much appreciated your discussion, Father. Thank you.

  4. I found this very interesting and insightful! I wonder, though, how the “scapegoating” of the Jews during the Holocaust fits in. Unfortunately Christianity did not prevent a fairly large number of people from participating in that form of state sanctioned human sacrifice. Luckily, there were many who chose to work against it at great risk to themselves.

  5. Fr. Barron. Thank you for thoughts on The Hunger Games. I have not seen the movie or read the book. The family is interested in seeing the movie, even though we haven’t read the books by Collins or been interested in the topic…until now. I may hold out for The Three Stooges coming out on the 13th of April and forego The Hunger Games altogether. I prefer comedy to drama.

With regard to human sacrifice, we need not look much further than abortion. Abortion really sets the tone for how “we”, collectively, view human life. With over 40 million abortions being performed worldwide for countless reasons, in my opinion, that number says more about human life and the human experience than anything else. If as a society, we could begin to understand the miracle of life and all of its blessings, we may not be so intrigued with societies, past and present, that want to kill each other.

If we taught more responsibility and accountability from an early age, if we viewed pregnancy as a blessing instead of a “right”, if we didn’t have 1/4 of the children in the US going to bed hungry tonight, we could change the human experience from birth. That would be my hope and prayer for today’s society.

While I understand the Aztec and ancient Roman Empire angles, the difference is we have 2000 years of Christ behind us and hopefully many more in front of us. While Christianity didn’t do itself favors at some points along the way, the day-to-day work that many of us do to take care of our communities goes unnoticed (which is fine by me, if we are to be true Stewards).

I read The Lottery in college. One of the greatest short stories I’ve ever read. Just goes to show many of us that our minds draw conclusions that aren’t correct before all the facts are presented.

May I recommend The 12th Disciple book to you and your audience (Amazon). Modern day Disciples coming together and ushering in a period before Revelation. Good for high school and up. I would be curious to receive feedback on The 12th Disciple from you as well.

    Cheers and God Bless…

  6. It sounds like the modern day “scapegoats” would be the un-born. Just listen to the hard-core pro-aborts who see abortion and are still unmoved to end it. Their answer to their response is usually something like “what would we do with all the poor, homeless, un-medicted, etc. children”. In stead of confronting the problem of not having enough available resources for those families and children in need, at the core of it they are saying we should rather kill the child.

  7. With havin so much written content do you ever run into any issues of plagorism or copyright violation? My blog has a lot of exclusive content I’ve either written myself or outsourced but it seems a lot of it is popping it up all over the web without my agreement. Do you know any solutions to help protect against content from being ripped off? I’d certainly appreciate it.
