One of the craziest ideas that continually occurs to me is that I am not worthy to receive the Mercy of God. I can’t keep going back to Confession for the same thing more than 4 times. I should be able to control myself. In our culture, when you don’t pay your bills, they cut off your lights. When you are a celebrity or known public figure and make a mistake, the media immediately preys upon you in order to attract a larger readership.
And yet… God’s love for us is nothing like these scenarios.
We are in constant need of mercy because our human condition is prone to failure. But how do we see these failures? Is it by the world’s standards where we think there is no hope of recovery? I get tired of failing God over and over again. Sometimes, I wonder when will he throw in the towel with me and just say enough is enough?
The events and image surrounding the appearance of Our Lady of Guadalupe over 500 years ago remind me that God’s Mercy and humility is truly an awesome thing, never to be doubted. Through this powerful and miraculous image, God reached out to a wretched, murderous and idol-ridden culture gently and through the love of his Mother. Even today, her message to the world through her apparitions attracts pilgrims from around the world, seeking the love and mercy of God.
I am reminded that God pursues us with His love by offering His Mercy to us no matter how far we fall and how hard it is for us to get back up. God does not dispense Mercy and love by the world’s standards. As we prepare for another coming of the Lord through Mary in a few weeks, renew or begin your commitment to preparing a place in your heart by letting God pursue you with the power of His Mercy!
