“They placed them at his feet, and he cured them.” I’m challenged by how simple that line is. There’s no record of a back and forth. No bartering or stipulations being offered. Yet, in this short line, you see a snapshot of this simple yet defining characteristic of the relationship between God and man: man, a being of need; God, a being of excess. Man, a creature of desire longing to be filled. God, a Creator of love longing to fulfill. C.S. Lewis argued that, “In God there is no hunger that needs to be filled, only plenteousness that desires to give.” And, here we see that collision of mankind’s need and this excessive giving of God’s nature. The result is miraculous. The mute speak, the lame walk, the blind see. These all shout to the reality that there is no human need that God cannot, and does not, want to meet.

Isaiah opens these readings proclaiming that the Lord “will provide for all” and describes that providence as a luxurious feast lavished upon His people. The psalmist follows suit, confident that when trusted to the Shepherd, the sheep “shall not want.” Further, we see these Old Testament truths incarnated in Jesus as He cures the sick and feeds the hungry (with plenty leftover), sharing that His, “heart is moved” at seeing His people in need.

Scripture makes it impossible to create a case claiming that God does not want to meet our needs. Yet, if I’m honest, that’s the lie of the Enemy I’ve welcomed most, the lie that God won’t provide. Be it finances or future, sickness or death, or anything in between, I often live as though I’ve been abandoned, left on my own to fulfill my heart’s desires. The result is disastrous. Sin. Despair. Living in a fear-filled attempt to hide my broken, hungry heart from my Maker.

So, what can I do? The same thing they did. Place my needs, desires… myself at His feet and trust Him to be God; to be Love, Goodness, and Providence in holy excess. This is His nature.
