This feast day marks the significant moment when Jesus Christ designated Peter as his successor, entrusting him with the leadership of the entire Church.

Jesus recognized Peter’s unique role among the Apostles. Peter was present with Jesus during pivotal moments, including the Transfiguration and the Agony in the Garden. Notably, Peter was the sole Apostle to witness Christ’s appearance on the day following the Resurrection. Often, Peter represented the Apostles, articulating their collective voice.

The critical exchange between Jesus and his Apostles unfolded when Jesus inquired, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”

Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

Jesus responded, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven” (Matthew 16:13-20).

Through these words, Jesus established St. Peter as the leader of the global community of believers, entrusting him with the spiritual guidance of the Church.

The first recorded observance of the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter dates back to 311, celebrating the day St. Peter professed his faith. Historically, the feast acknowledged the day the Lord appointed St. Peter as the Church’s head, acting as Christ’s Vicar on earth.

  1. So I guess St. Mary Magdalene doesn’t count as the first apostle to see Christ resurrected, since she’s a woman…? :/

      • Shawn, grace and peace! There is ample proof that Mary Magdalene was far more important than Peter! There has always been misogynism where the Roman Church is concerned; in fact, there is indisputable evidence that in a second century bapistry in Ephesus, that on that pool’s bottom, as well as in various frescoes, we have clear and distinct murals of women priests, including Bishops, celebrating the Eucharist! We also know now, through patient scholarship and ancient pseudepigrapha, Mary Magdalene was not a prostitute; she was a rich widow in Magdala, who actually was married to Jesus, and bore him at least three children, the daughter of which became the genesis of the Merovingian Dynasty in France! It would have been beyond reason for Mary Magdalene to sit shiva for Jesus unless she was married to him! Unfortunately, the Roman Church turned Jesus into more or less a desert Eremite, making him otherworldly from the Councils of Nicaea to Chalcedon! And, to bring things into a more clearer light, the Roman Church with its associated papacy, did not begin until the fourth century, and Peter could not have been the First Pope, because historically we can prove that Peter may have never actually visited Rome, or may have been there very shortly against his will! It is also interesting from a scholarly point of view that the current Canonical New Testament Scriptures have an entire Pauline corpus of Epistles, whereas, the two Epistles attributed to St. Peter are of quite dubious authorship! If anything, Paul would have been a much better Pope than Peter; Peter was neither a brilliant writer nor was he a wise diplomat, as evidenced by his dogged insistence to make a Christian a Jew! 2. Oh Holy ones please pray for us and the poor souls of purgatory, the holy father, priest, young mothers with babies, my sister Virginia

  3. O God, Who by delivering to Thy blessed Apostle Peter
the keys of the kingdom of Heaven,
didst confer upon him the pontifical power of binding and of loosing,
grant that, by the help of his intercession,
we may be delivered from the bonds of our sins.
Who livest and reignest with Thee,
    One God, world without end.

    Amen.

  4. I do not recall a one on one encounter between St Peter and the Lord the day after the Resurrection.
Perhaps the reference was by the Sea of Galilee but he was with the other disciples then.
    St Peter pray for us🙏🏻
