The last few months have been very emotional for our country. There has been tremendous wailing and gnashing, a great many people deeply disappointed in the results of our country’s election. There have been riots and protests and large gatherings of very angry human beings.

Even if you were on the “winning” side of this debate, the rage is unsettling. I want people to be happy — why can’t we all just get along? This is especially true if this has become personal. It’s one thing to read all about this on the news; it’s quite another to experience these emotions within your own family.

It’s painful, and it isn’t fun.

But here’s the really beautiful thing about seasons like this: it reminds us that our trust is in the Lord. We can’t depend on the things of this world to bring us peace and happiness. We can’t gauge our inner state through the lens of our external circumstances.

As the first reading tells us:

Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD,
whose hope is the LORD.
He is like a tree planted beside the waters
that stretches out its roots to the stream:
It fears not the heat when it comes,
its leaves stay green;
In the year of drought it shows no distress,
but still bears fruit.

We should not fear, scripture tells us, because our hope is not in the things of this world.

During this season of Lent, let us reflect on the things that rob us of our peace and give them to God. He is waiting with outstretched arms to carry our burdens for us. We don’t need to fear or fret because God is in control. That does not change with the seasons or the years — he is God and he is here to bring us peace.

  1. Ms Rachel Balducci you are great. I like your reflection as it teaches us not to lose hope. Although I’m from Malta (tiny island in the Mediterranean) your reflection can be used in every situation when things don’t go the way we want them. Keep it up and thank you for your thoughts to help us during the Lenten period. Amen and God bless you and your family.
